Deep sea fishing in Greenland with our local captains

Deep sea fishing in Greenland means dropping a line into some of the coldest, cleanest water in the world. Out in the fjords and open Arctic around Nuuk, the depths hold cod, redfish, and Greenland halibut, strong fish that fight hard.

Our Targa boats carry you to the right grounds, run by local captains who know exactly where the fish are holding. Experienced or first-timer, this is deep sea fishing as the Arctic intended: wild, rewarding, and set against mountains and drifting ice.

There's nothing like the moment a cod breaks the surface, heavy on the line and silver against the dark Arctic water. One of our guests landed this one out in Nuuk Fjord, a solid catch from cold, deep water.

What to expect from deep sea fishing in Greenland

Deep sea fishing in Greenland puts you over cold, deep Arctic water teeming with life. From the shelter of Nuuk Fjord to the open coast, our local captains know where the fish hold and how the conditions change through the day. Strong fish, big country, and a day on the sea that stays with you.

The bright catch of the deep

A striking deep-water fish, bright orange-red with a steady, stubborn pull. Redfish hold over the deeper grounds off Nuuk and are as good on the plate as they are on the line.

One of the most recognisable fish in Greenland's deep water, the redfish is a deep orange-red from nose to tail, with spiny fins and large dark eyes built for life far below the surface.

They hold over the deeper grounds off Nuuk, and once hooked they give a steady, stubborn pull all the way up. Slow-growing and long-lived, redfish are a prized catch in cold water, and as good on the plate as any fish these waters offer.

A surprise from the depths

Few guests expect a stingray in the Arctic, which makes it one of the more memorable catches of a day on the water. Broad, flat, and surprisingly powerful, it uses its whole body against the line and can turn a routine drop into a genuine fight. When one comes up it's a real talking point on board, and always one we handle carefully and release back to the deep where it belongs.

The classic catch of Arctic waters

If there's one fish that defines deep sea fishing in Greenland, it's the Atlantic cod. They run heavy and abundant through Nuuk Fjord, holding near the bottom and fighting hard the whole way to the surface. Cod are the fish many guests come for, reliable enough to keep a day busy and big enough to make every drop worth it. Fresh from the cold water, they're also among the finest eating you'll find.

The deep-water heavyweight

Greenland halibut hold in the deepest, coldest water of all, and hooking one is a serious test of nerve and tackle. Dense and immensely strong, a good halibut fights like dead weight that suddenly comes alive, pulling line and testing your arms all the way up. Landing one is a genuine achievement, and as one of the most prized fish in the Arctic, it's a catch that stays with you long after the trip.

The powerhouse of the seabed

Strange-looking and seriously powerful, the wolffish is a bottom-dweller with a blunt head and a set of teeth built for crushing shellfish, so handle it with respect. What it lacks in looks it makes up for in fight, pulling hard and digging deep against the line. It's a catch with real character, and despite the fearsome appearance, one of the best eating fish to come out of these cold Arctic waters.

"Phenomenal tour group. I booked a fishing/dining excursion with them my first day in Nuuk and it was one of the highlights of my trip. The guides are knowledgeable, talented, and take genuine interest in facilitating positive experiences for their guests. On my tour, we went deep sea fishing, caught a boat load of cod (using traditional Greenlandic fishing reels) and took them back to a restaurant where the chef prepared them in front of us. Such an incredible experience. 10/10."

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know for your deep sea fishing trip in Greenland, from the fish you'll catch to what's included on board. If you can't find your answer here, feel free to reach out to us anytime.

What exactly is a deep sea fishing trip with Raw Arctic?

A guided day on the water aboard our own Targa boats, out into Nuuk Fjord and the open Arctic with a local captain and crew. We take you to the grounds that are fishing best on the day, set you up with all the tackle, and handle everything from the moment you step aboard. Whether it's your first time on a rod or you've fished your whole life, the trip is shaped around you and the conditions.

What fish will I catch?

Greenland's cold, deep water holds cod, Greenland halibut, redfish, wolffish, and the occasional stingray. What you land depends on the season, the depth, and the day. Cod are the most reliable and abundant, while halibut and wolffish are the real heavyweights. Our crew know where each species holds and will put you on the right water.

Do I need any experience or my own gear?

Neither. Every trip comes fully equipped with quality rods, reels, lines, and rigs matched to the fish and the depth, all maintained and ready when you arrive. Our local crew set you up and guide you through the day, so first-timers and seasoned anglers are equally at home.

When is the best time for deep sea fishing in Greenland?

The waters fish well right through the open season, roughly late spring into autumn. Conditions shift with the weather and the time of year, but the fish are there throughout. Tell us your dates and we'll tell you what to expect.

How long are the trips and how many people come along?

Most deep sea trips run as half or full days, with small groups so everyone gets room to fish and time with the crew. Larger private charters can be arranged for families or groups, just let us know your numbers and we'll match the boat to the booking.

We're arriving by cruise ship. Can we fit a trip into our port time?

Yes. We run shorter trips timed around cruise schedules, so you can get out on the water and back to your ship comfortably. Tell us your port hours and we'll build the day to fit.

What is your cancellation policy?

Arctic weather is unpredictable, and safety always comes first. If conditions force us to cancel, we'll reschedule where possible or arrange a refund. Full booking and cancellation terms are shared when you reserve.
