Skiing in Greenland, from summit to sea

Experience skiing in Greenland where the mountains rise straight from the sea. In spring, when the snow is stable and the days run long, you can skin up untouched coastal peaks and carve corn and powder lines all the way back down to the fjord.

Ski touring and heliskiing, with the logistics handled

Greenland offers two unforgettable ways to ski its wild coastal mountains. With ski touring (randonnée), you skin up under your own power and earn long, untracked descents back toward the fjord. With heliskiing, a helicopter lifts you to remote high lines few will ever ride. We're your access and logistics partner for both: we arrange boat transfers to the peaks, transport, and the practical details, and connect you with certified local guides and heli operators who lead the skiing itself. So whatever your style and ability, getting there is seamless and you ski in expert hands.

Skiing in Greenland, untouched lines from summit to sea

Greenland is one of the last great frontiers for skiing, vast, lift-free, and almost entirely untracked. In spring the snow stays deep while the days stretch toward endless light, and many descents run all the way down to the fjord's edge. Raw Arctic helps you reach this wild terrain, whether you earn your turns on the skins or drop in from the air, far from any crowd.

Randonnée, skin up and ski wild descents

Ski touring, or ski de randonnée, is the purest way to take on Greenland's mountains. Climb untouched slopes under your own power, then carve long descents that can run all the way to the water's edge. With no lifts and no crowds, many of the lines you ski have rarely been touched. It is backcountry skiing in Greenland at its most rewarding.

Heliskiing, first tracks in the Arctic backcountry

A helicopter unlocks terrain that would take days to reach on foot, dropping you on high ridges above endless untracked snow. Greenland's heliskiing, centered on the peaks around Maniitsoq, delivers huge vertical descents that finish at the water's edge. For strong skiers chasing first tracks far from anywhere, few places on Earth compare.

Cross-country, glide across the frozen north

Greenland has a deep cross-country skiing culture, home to the legendary Arctic Circle Race near Sisimiut, often called the world's toughest. Whether you are gliding across open snowfields or finding your rhythm on groomed trails, it is a quiet, rewarding way to move through the winter landscape. Open to newcomers and seasoned skiers alike.

Untouched spring skiing, made simple

Greenland's coastal mountains hold some of the most untouched spring skiing on earth, but reaching them is the hard part. That's where we come in. We arrange the boat access, transport, and trip logistics that take you from town to the foot of remote peaks, and connect you with certified local guides and heli operators who handle the skiing safely. You focus on the climb, the line, and the descent to the sea. We take care of everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before a ski trip in Greenland, from the season and terrain to how touring and heliskiing work. If you can't find your answer here, feel free to reach out to us anytime.

What exactly is a “custom” tour with Raw Arctic?

Every itinerary is built from scratch around the dates, ability, group size, and budget you give us. For skiing, we act as your access and logistics partner: we arrange the boat transfers to the peaks, transport, and the practical details, and connect you with certified local guides and heli operators who lead the skiing itself. So whether you want a few days of ski touring from the boat or a wider trip combining touring, heliskiing, and other Arctic experiences, we shape the whole thing around you, with no off-the-shelf templates.

When is the ski season in Greenland?

Skiing in Greenland is a spring activity, running broadly from late March through May, when the days are long, the light is strong, and the snowpack settles into stable spring conditions. This is the sweet spot for the classic ski-to-the-sea descents, with corn snow lower down and powder still holding higher up. It is not a deep-winter or summer activity, and exact timing shifts year to year with the snow and weather, so we will always advise on the best window for the season you are planning around.

What's the difference between ski touring and heliskiing?

Ski touring (randonnée) is human-powered: you fit climbing skins to your skis and ascend under your own steam, earning long descents through untracked terrain. It rewards fitness and a love of the mountains as much as the skiing. Heliskiing swaps the climb for a helicopter lift, dropping you high on remote lines that would take days to reach on foot, so you get more vertical and access to bigger, wilder terrain. Both run in spring, both reach untouched snow, and we can build a trip around either or combine the two.

What ability and fitness level do I need?

You should be a confident off-piste skier, comfortable on varied ungroomed snow, since this is backcountry terrain rather than a marked resort. For ski touring you also need a good level of fitness, as the ascents are sustained and you carry a pack. Heliskiing is less physically demanding on the way up but still requires solid off-piste technique for the descents. If you tell us your experience and fitness honestly when we plan your trip, the guides can match the terrain to your level so you get the most out of it safely.

What about avalanche safety and equipment?

Backcountry skiing carries real mountain risk, which is exactly why the skiing is led by certified local guides who assess the snowpack, choose terrain to suit the conditions, and carry the training to manage it. Standard avalanche safety equipment, a transceiver, shovel, and probe, is essential, and your guide will brief you on its use; rental can usually be arranged. You will need your own touring or freeride setup or can hire one, and we will send a full equipment list when we plan your trip so nothing is left to chance.

We're arriving by cruise ship. Can we fit a ski trip in our port time?

Skiing needs more time than a typical port call allows, since reaching the terrain, climbing or flying in, and skiing back is a half or full-day commitment at minimum, and it only works in the spring season. If your itinerary includes a longer stay during spring, we may be able to arrange something, but for most cruise guests skiing is better suited to a dedicated trip. Send us your schedule and we will tell you honestly what is realistic, and suggest alternatives if the timing doesn't fit.

What is your cancellation policy?

Skiing depends entirely on snow, weather, and avalanche conditions, so trips may need to be adjusted or rescheduled at short notice, and safety always comes first. If a day can't run for safety or conditions reasons, we and our partners will work with you to rebook or find an alternative. For guest-initiated cancellations, the specific terms and timelines are set out in your booking confirmation, so we recommend reviewing those when you book. Because heliskiing in particular involves committed helicopter costs, its terms may differ, and we will make those clear before you book.
