Kayaking in Greenland

Experience kayaking in Greenland where it all began, the fjords and coastlines that gave the world the kayak. In the long days of summer, glide past towering icebergs and along glassy water, low to the surface, close to the wildlife, and far from any engine.

We get you to the water, guides take it from there

The best paddling in Greenland is far from any harbour, and reaching it is where we come in. We arrange the boat transfers, transport, and logistics that carry you and your kayaks out to remote, sheltered put-in points other operators simply can't reach, then hand over to certified local guides who lead you safely on the water. They read the conditions, set the route, and look after the group, while you focus on the rhythm of the paddle and the silence of the fjord. Getting there is seamless. The experience is yours.

From above, the scale is humbling: a single kayak among the ice, a reminder of just how vast and wild this place really is.

Kayaking in Greenland, paddle the fjords where the kayak was born

The kayak is Greenland's gift to the world, shaped by the Inuit thousands of years ago to hunt these very waters. Today you can take to the same fjords by sea kayak, gliding silently past icebergs and beneath towering peaks at water level, the way the Arctic was meant to be seen. Raw Arctic's kayaking trips pair sheltered routes with experienced guides, so first-timers and seasoned paddlers alike find their line.

Expeditions kayaking, days on the water, nights under canvas

For paddlers who want more than an afternoon, our multi-day kayak expeditions trace remote stretches of Nuuk Fjord far beyond the reach of day tours. Camp on quiet shores, wake to glass-still water, and cover real distance across one of the world's largest fjord systems. It is sea kayaking in Greenland at its most immersive, wild, self-sufficient, and unforgettable.

Between icebergs, paddle through a frozen sculpture park

There is nothing like sitting at water level as an iceberg the size of a house drifts past. On these routes we thread the kayaks through fields of floating ice, close enough to hear it crack and settle, always at a safe and respectful distance. The scale, the silence, and the impossible blues make this one of the most photographed kayaking experiences in Greenland.

Among giants, share the fjord with whales

Few moments in the Arctic compare to hearing a whale surface while you sit quietly in a kayak. In summer, humpbacks and minkes feed in Greenland's fjords, and a paddle puts you closer to the water than any boat ever could. Our guides read the conditions and hold a respectful distance, so the encounter stays safe for you and for the giants you came to see.

The oldest way to know these waters

The kayak was born in Greenland, shaped by the Inuit thousands of years ago to hunt and travel these very fjords. To paddle here is to take part in that long history, moving across the water under your own power, silent and unhurried, exactly as people have for generations. There's no engine, no rush, just the dip of the paddle and the vast Arctic around you. We arrange the boat access and logistics to get you out to the water, and certified local guides lead you safely once you're there. The rest is yours to take in.

What our guests say:

"Raw Arctic gave us absolutely amazing 10-days trip in Greenland. They’ve organised everything from the pick up at the airport through hunting, boat sailing, hiking, etc. They were also extremely helpful when our schedule got derailed because of unpredictable internal flights. They did it all with easiness, laughs, positive attitude and good energy. Special thanks to Isak and Salik for making this experience so flawless and unforgettable!"

"Thanks to the experience, dedication, and professionalism of the young people at Raw Arctic, who designed a series of challenging and rewarding experiences for us, we felt that we had truly been given a glimpse of the real Greenland. Not the Greenland of brochures and advertisements, but the authentic one—raw, beautiful, and full of character. We already know that we will return. Next time, with an even more ambitious plan. And there is little doubt that this future Greenland adventure will once again be shared with the team at Raw Arctic."

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before a kayaking trip in Greenland, from experience and season to what you'll see and how we keep you safe. If you can't find your answer here, feel free to reach out to us anytime.

What exactly is a “custom” tour with Raw Arctic?

Every itinerary is built from scratch around the dates, experience, group size, and budget you give us. For kayaking, we act as your access and logistics partner: we arrange the boat transfers out to remote put-in points, the transport, and the practical details, and connect you with certified local guides who lead the paddling itself. So whether you want a gentle half-day on sheltered water or a longer trip combining kayaking with other Arctic experiences, we shape the whole thing around you, with no off-the-shelf templates.

Do I need kayaking experience?

It depends on the route, and we'll match the trip to your level. Calm, sheltered fjord paddles can suit beginners and first-timers, with the guide giving full instruction before you set off, while longer or more exposed routes call for previous sea kayaking experience and a reasonable level of fitness. The most important thing is to be honest about your experience when you book, so the guides can choose water that's both safe and rewarding for you. If you're unsure, just ask and we'll point you to the right option.

When is the kayaking season in Greenland?

Kayaking is a summer activity, running broadly from June to September, when the days are long, the water is most navigable, and conditions are at their most settled. The midnight sun stretches your time on the water, and the fjords are alive with wildlife and drifting ice. Outside these months the conditions become far less suitable for paddling. Exact timing shifts year to year with the weather and ice, so we'll always advise on the best window for the season you're planning around.

What will I see from the kayak?

That low, quiet vantage point is what makes kayaking special. Expect towering icebergs and glassy fjords up close, dramatic coastlines and cliffs, and a real chance of wildlife, seals, seabirds, and sometimes whales surfacing nearby. Because a kayak makes no engine noise, you can drift gently and let the Arctic come to you, often experiencing animals and ice far more intimately than from a boat. Your guide will know the most rewarding routes for the conditions on the day.

Is it safe, and what about the cold water?

Safety comes first, which is exactly why the paddling is led by certified local guides who assess the conditions, choose suitable water, and manage the group throughout. Arctic water is cold, so proper equipment is essential: you'll be fitted with a suitable kayak, a spray deck, a buoyancy aid, and appropriate paddling clothing, and your guide will brief you on safety before you launch. We arrange the logistics around this so everything is in place, and the guides won't put a group on water that isn't right for their level or the day's conditions.

We're arriving by cruise ship. Can we fit a kayaking trip in our port time?

A shorter guided paddle can sometimes work within a port call, especially on sheltered water close to where we can launch, but it depends on timing, conditions, and how long you're ashore. Reaching the best put-in points by boat takes time, so a dedicated trip will always offer more. Send us your ship's arrival and departure times and we'll tell you honestly what's realistic, and suggest the best option for your hours in port.

What is your cancellation policy?

Because kayaking depends on weather, wind, and water conditions, trips may need to be adjusted or rescheduled at short notice, and safety always comes first. If a trip can't run for safety or conditions reasons, we and our partners will work with you to rebook or arrange a refund. For guest-initiated cancellations, the specific terms and timelines are set out in your booking confirmation, so we recommend reviewing those when you book. If you have any questions about a particular date, reach out and we'll walk you through it.
