Hiking and trekking in Greenland, walk a land without roads

With no road network between towns, Greenland is a country made for walking. Trails lead from the edge of Nuuk straight into open tundra, past glacier-carved valleys, rushing rivers, and mountains that drop to the sea. Raw Arctic guides hikers of every level into this wild terrain, from gentle half-day routes to multi-day treks deep in the backcountry, always with the land's raw beauty close at hand.

NuukKap, the Nuuk to Kapisillit mountain race

The NuukKap Xtreme Running Race is a demanding mountain adventure covering roughly 110 kilometers over three days, running from Nuuk through Kobberfjorden and Qooqqut to Kapisillit. It climbs to around 1,300 meters on day two, with snowy stretches and sweeping fjord views, and finishes in Kapisillit with a music festival to celebrate. Hikers can take on the same route at a gentler pace, starting two hours ahead of the racers. It is the ultimate trekking challenge in the Nuuk backcountry, raw, remote, and unforgettable.

Arctic Circle Trail, Greenland's legendary long-distance trek

Running roughly 160 kilometers from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut, the Arctic Circle Trail is one of the world's great wilderness treks. Expect a week or more of lakes, tundra, and total solitude, with simple huts and tent spots along the way. It is the ultimate test for self-sufficient hikers chasing real remoteness in Greenland.

Sea to Summit, from the shoreline to the high ground

Some of the finest hikes in Greenland begin right at the water's edge and climb steadily to a panoramic summit. Step off the boat and walk up through tundra and rock to a ridge with views over fjord, glacier, and open ocean. Pairing a boat transfer with a hike, sea to summit reaches trailheads no road ever could.

Arctic Wildlife, sharing the trail with the locals

Hiking is one of the best ways to encounter Greenland's wildlife on its own terms. Watch for reindeer grazing the slopes, Arctic hares bounding across the rock, and sea eagles overhead, all framed by the silence of the open tundra. A guide who knows the land helps you spot what most walkers stride right past.

Hike Greenland, where the wild reveals itself slowly

On foot is the truest way to know Greenland. Trails lead you across summit ridgelines, glacier valleys, open tundra, and quiet fjord shores, each turn opening a new view few ever reach. Whether you have a few hours for a summit hike above Nuuk or several days for a deeper trek into the backcountry, our local guides shape every route around your pace and the season. Move slowly, look closely, and let the scale of the Arctic reset your sense of distance.

What our guests say:

"Raw Arctic gave us absolutely amazing 10-days trip in Greenland. They’ve organised everything from the pick up at the airport through hunting, boat sailing, hiking, etc. They were also extremely helpful when our schedule got derailed because of unpredictable internal flights. They did it all with easiness, laughs, positive attitude and good energy. Special thanks to Isak and Salik for making this experience so flawless and unforgettable!"

Greenland hiking tours FAQs and tips

Everything you need to know before lacing up. If your question is not here, reach out anytime.

What is a Greenland hiking tour like?

Most of our hikes start in or near Nuuk and head straight into terrain you cannot reach by road. A typical half-day route climbs to a summit or ridge with sweeping views over the fjord and city, while full-day and multi-day treks push deeper into remote valleys, past glaciers, lakes, and open tundra. You hike at a steady, conversational pace with a local guide who sets the route based on conditions, stops for photos and rest, and shares the geology, wildlife, and Greenlandic history along the way. Group sizes are kept small so the experience stays personal and flexible.

Do I need hiking experience to join?

No prior experience is required for our easier routes. We offer everything from gentle half-day walks on well-defined paths to demanding summit climbs over rocky, uneven ground, so there is something for first-time hikers and seasoned trekkers alike. The main thing we ask is that you are honest about your fitness and comfort level when you book, so we can match you to the right route. If you are unsure, get in touch and we will recommend a hike that fits.

How fit do I need to be?

It depends entirely on the route. For a relaxed coastal or valley walk, a reasonable level of everyday fitness and the ability to walk a few hours on uneven ground is enough. For summit hikes you should be comfortable with sustained uphill effort and some scrambling over rock, often for five hours or more. Multi-day treks add the demands of carrying a pack and walking on consecutive days, so a bit of training beforehand makes the experience far more enjoyable. We are always happy to talk through what a specific route involves before you commit.

When is the best season for hiking in Greenland?

The main hiking season runs from roughly June to September, when the snow has cleared from the lower trails and temperatures are mildest. Midsummer brings almost around-the-clock daylight, so you can hike late into the evening, while late August and September add autumn colour across the tundra and ripe wild berries. Winter transforms the same landscape into snow-covered terrain better suited to snowshoes and ski touring, often with the chance of Northern Lights once the sky darkens. Each season has its own character, so the best time really depends on what you want from the trip.

What will I see on the trail?

Expect dramatic, ever-changing Arctic scenery: snow-streaked peaks, glacier fronts, turquoise meltwater lakes, deep fjords, and wide tundra dotted with rock and moss. Wildlife is part of the draw, with chances to spot Arctic hare, ptarmigan, reindeer, and white-tailed eagles, plus seals or whales out in the fjord on coastal routes. In summer the ground comes alive with wildflowers and edible berries like crowberries and blueberries. On clear winter nights, the aurora can light up the whole sky.

Are the hikes safe, and what about the weather?

Safety is at the heart of how we operate. Every hike is led by an experienced local guide who knows the terrain and how to read fast-changing Arctic weather, and each trip begins with a briefing. Our guides carry satellite communication and a first-aid kit on every route, so help can be reached even in remote backcountry with no mobile signal. Conditions in Greenland can shift quickly, so we sometimes adjust or reschedule a route for your safety, and we will always be upfront with you about the call.

Can I combine hiking with a boat trip?

Yes, and it is one of the best ways to experience the region. Many of the finest hiking areas around Nuuk sit deep in the fjord system, so we reach them by boat and then continue on foot, which opens up valleys and viewpoints that day hikers from town never see. A boat-and-hike day blends a scenic sail past icebergs and coastline with a trek into genuine wilderness, and you can return the same day or stay overnight at a remote cabin. Just let us know your interests and we will build the right mix.

Let's plan your hiking trip to Greenland

Tell us how you like to move and what you want to see, and we will shape a route to match, from a half-day summit hike above Nuuk to a multi-day trek deep into the backcountry. Our local guides handle the planning, logistics, and safety, so all you have to do is show up ready to walk.
