Why Greenland?

Greenland stands out as a premier destination for the unique sport fly fishing.
The rivers are pristine and crystal-clear, perfect for sight fishing. The thrill of casting to a visible fish, watching its reaction, and the patience required to set the hook at just the right moment are unparalleled experiences.

Venturing deep into Greenland’s fjords, you’ll feel a sense of true adventure and isolation. The peace and tranquility of the remote backcountry, coupled with the purest air and the feeling of being among the few to fish these waters, creates an almost timeless experience. Drinking directly from the freshwater streams adds to the sense of stepping back to a time when glaciers had just receded, leaving behind powerful Arctic char.

What do you need to catch Arctic Char in Greenland on fly?

The truth is that many possibilities exists but we have a few recommendations in mind, when it comes to catching these magnificent Chars.

Season

Greenland’s fishing season is notably brief. Arctic char leave the rivers in early spring as soon as the ice breaks, which can be as early as May depending on the location. They remain in saltwater until July, when they begin migrating back into the rivers. This return varies by location, generally occurring within the first three weeks of July. During this period, the fishing is reliably good until the end of August, and in some areas, it extends to mid-September.

This creates two distinct fishing seasons in Greenland: a spring season in saltwater and a mid-summer to fall season in freshwater. We therefore offer a camp located at the Isua river around July 10th. However, targeted Arctic char in saltwater is offered during May and June. This option is mainly for those in Greenland off-season, who wish to fish before the main runs begin.

Off-season further gives opportunities for great fishing for Cod and Halibut, that can be targeted on day tours.

Fly Fishing Equipment and Gear

Fly Rods
5 Weight: Ideal for calm days.
6 Weight: A versatile choice for all conditions and our top recommendation if you only bring one rod.
7 Weight: Suitable for windy days.

Reel
A reel with a good drag system is essential due to the strong currents and the fierce strength of Arctic char.

Fly Lines
WF (Weight Forward) Lines: Recommended due to the depth of the rivers.
Sinking Lines: Useful for fishing in deeper parts of the river.

Leaders and Tippets
Leaders: We recommend long leaders, ranging from 9 to 14 feet, to catch more elusive fish.
Tippets: Use tippets ranging from 0.25 mm to 0.33 mm for fighting against strong char.

Flies
Dry Flies: Foam flies are excellent for sight fishing due to their visual nature.
Classical Flies: Woolly buggers, nymphs, and bigger streamers are also effective for catching Arctic char.

Additional Gear
Waders: Optional but beneficial for navigating wet terrain and achieving better casting positions.
Cap and Sunglasses: Essential for protecting your eyes from the never-setting sun and for spotting migrating char.
Backup Rod: Highly recommended, as the strong char can sometimes break rods.
