Where History, Silence, and Fjord Landscapes Meet
This half-day journey takes you deep into Nuuk Fjord to one of its most atmospheric places - the abandoned village of Qoornoq. Once home to fishermen and their families, today it stands quiet, surrounded by towering mountains, Arctic tundra, and views that stretch all the way toward the distant icefjord.
Here, the past feels close. The silence feels different. And the connection between people and landscape becomes unmistakable.
Where Fjord History Still Echoes
As we leave Nuuk behind, the fjord opens around us — wide, rugged, and timeless. The city fades within minutes, replaced by mountain silhouettes and the long, branching waterways that define Greenland’s largest fjord system.
Qoornoq sits on a small peninsula positioned in a remarkable way:
Look one direction and you see toward the icefjord.
Turn the other way and vast granite peaks rise above Qoornup Sullua, one of the most scenic channels in the region.
From the sea, the cabins begin to appear — one here, one there — subtle signs of a place that comes alive again only in summer, when locals return to repair their homes, gather with family, and enjoy the stillness of the fjord.
A Settlement Shaped by Sea and Seasons
In the early 1900s, Qoornoq was a small but active fishing village, complete with a fish factory, local homes, and families who lived entirely from the sea. Its location was chosen with care: fresh water, protection from wind, boat access, and rich fishing grounds nearby.
Today, Qoornoq stands quiet — not forgotten, but paused.
Walking here, you feel how Greenlandic communities were shaped by nature, seasons, and survival. The landscape still holds the stories.
Whether covered in summer wildflowers or resting beneath winter snow, the village has a peaceful simplicity that invites you to slow down and take it in.
Exploring Qoornoq
We spend around 1.5 hours on land, and you are free to explore at your own pace.
Follow your guide to the remains of the old fish factory and hear how life once unfolded here.
Or walk up the small hill for a panoramic view — mountains on one side, the icefjord visible in the distance on the other.
Or simply wander among the cabins and shoreline paths, letting the atmosphere of this remote fjord settlement sink in.
This is a place where time moves gently. A place that feels both abandoned and deeply alive.
A Moment to Pause
Many guests choose to add a Greenlandic Tapas Plate, enjoyed while overlooking the fjord.
It’s a beautiful way to settle into the moment — tasting Greenlandic flavours such as for example reindeer, musk ox, or Arctic char, depending on the season.
Enjoy it outdoors with the fresh fjord air, quiet surroundings, and the slow calm that defines Qoornoq.
After our visit, we begin the 1.5-hour journey back toward Nuuk — a peaceful return through shifting light and mountain scenery.
